Process of a Painting: deepening the background

I deepened the background with a glaze of watery blue-black. It had the effect I was hoping for, but I think I'll go back later and pull out a few colored shapes. Hair is looking better with deeper shadows and some lighter highlights. Next I'll paint in the jacket and piggy...have to dig up my other resource photo...er....

Process of a Painting: color matching

Painted the hair yesterday and touched up the face. I didn't save and of the skin tone, so I'm having a tough time matching the color...argh...frustrating! Also I think the hair could pop more from the background. Today I'm going to tone down the background with a transparent cool glaze and add some shadows. We'll see....

Process of a painting: the face

Larger, less intense shapes in the background. Now it's less busy and hopefully won't compete with the figure. Painted the face today. So far I like it, although it doesn't look exactly like my daughter. Looking forward to the hair. Curls should be fun!

Making a painting: Carving out a studio space.


Step one...
Gather the materials. Some stuff is from school. 50 dollars for 4 tubes of fancy paint. M Graham was on sale for 40 % off. Just got the primaries! Found a place to paint in the office/hide junk room.
